Basil, Pesto Perpetuo (Ocimum basilicum citriodorum )

Color Name: Basil Pesto Perpetuo

Ocimum basilicum citriodorum.  The beauty and flavor of this basil will earn it a prominent place in your herb garden. Not only is Pesto Perpetuo a superb culinary plant, but its light green and cream variegation makes it an eye-catching gem. The non-flowering, columnar plants grow up to 48 inches tall, furnishing enough foliage for pesto by the pound! With substantial light, Pesto Perpetuo will be happy indoors during winter months. Hardy in zones 9-11.

'Pesto Perpetuo' is valued not only for its aromatic leaves but also for its ornamental foliage, making this basil an extremely attractive foliage plant for garden areas and containers.

So strikingly different, your neighbors won't even know it's basil.  Spikes of white, two-lipped flowers appear as summer temperatures heat up. While these are attractive to bees and butterflies, it is best to pick off buds as they appear to keep leaves from turning bitter and smaller in size.

And the taste is pure, unadulterated sweet basil. Strong enough to carry your best pesto recipe all by itself or to top fresh slices of tomato and mozzarella. Fresh leaves may also be frozen for later use in culinary dishes.

Growing Tips: Growing tips: Compost and manure should be added a month after sowing. Be sure to avoid over-crowding as the plant requires decent air circulation. Pinch out flowers as they appear to preserve aromatic properties. Harvest top-outer leaves first to promote additional growth. Best to harvest from multiple plants at once as opposed to harvesting entire plants. Leaves can be frozen once harvested. Attracts bees, butterflies and birds.
