Silver Dollar Gum (Eucalyptus cinerea)

Color Name: Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is an annual in zone 5, but other closely related varieties in this family grow to be enormous trees in warmer climates. A favorite in fresh flower arrangements and ‘swags’, Eucalyptus is recognizable by its distinctive silvery blue-green, rounded leaves. It is equally beautiful in the garden, and gives a strong minty scent wherever it is.


Eucalyptus is a great plant that can be used for so many different things it is great for sore throat, sinuses, clean wounds, cough drops and just great aroma. Plant near doors or deck and it is a great insect repellant. Protect eucalyptus from the harsh winter as it is a tender perennial, so once the root system is well established it should return each year with some mulching and protection.

Growing Tips: Space plants 12-14 ft. apart. Eucalyptus likes full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. Solar mulch is recommended in areas with short growing seasons. Harvest after leaves start to feel leathery. 120-150 days. Eucalyptus is easy to grow once established it is drought tolerant
